[edit]

Most of the pieces by Leroy Anderson listed here are not songs at all, so this entire category is dubious - yet I don't know if I should just nuke it or not because I think that. So I'll just leave this note for someone else to act on who knows better how to deal with this.

It reflects the deplorable trend for some people to refer to any musical composition, especially a popular one, as a "song"; but a song has singing and words, and a musical composition often has neither.

Some Leroy Anderson pieces may have been adapted as songs by others, adding a vocal part and words, so any piece which can be shown to have been adapted thus could be in this category; but it is incorrect to automatically put any orchestral piece by Anderson in this category. I don't disagree with you, a "music writer" writes music, whether there are lyrics/words/libretto added or not. What I wouldn't want to see is this small cat split into two because some are songs and some are not. Whether this means that the whole "Songs with music by" category should be renamed as "musical compositions by" (or similar) so that instrumental and song can sit happily side by side is another matter. I think the whole category tree needs looking at rather than a single composer. --Richhoncho (talk) 09:36, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
